2017 at a Glance

January 10, 2018

The year 2017 marked a lot of new things for the world, politics, and for entertainment. A new President was elected, climaxes in the war on terrorism brought both fear and hope, and some of entertainment’s biggest stars had their true colors shown. Above all 2017 was a year for those who wanted to be heard, from the working class to Hollywood stars grievances were voiced and in 2017 those voices were heard.

Music was nonstop in 2017, From Jay-Z releasing his new album 4:44 to conversations about a new Drake album before his possible hiatus. There were breakout stars like Post Malone and “Portugal. The Man.”. Even NBA stars were getting into the mix as Rip City point guard Damian Lillard, and number one draft pick Lonzo Ball, were both voicing their rap capabilities. Damian Lillard was even working on his first album throughout the year. Here are some of the top 100 Billboard songs of 2017:

1 Perfect- Ed Sheeran & Beyonce

2 Rockstar- Post Malone Ft. 21 Savage

          5 Thunder- Imagine Dragons

23 Feel it Still- Portugal. The Man

         44 Silence- Marshmello Ft. Khalid

In the science field, Chinese computer scientists teleported photons (properties of light) from the ground into outer space for the first time in history. To accomplish this, they used mirrors and lasers. This quantum physics achievement could lead to new ways of transporting energy and information around the world, according to Business Insider.

In sports, Cleveland Cavaliers and Boston Celtics trade top point guards in off season. Both players averaged around or over 25 points a game, and both teams made it to the conference finals. Never before had any two teams who both made the playoffs trade two players both averaging over 25 points a game. Kyrie had wanted out of the Cavaliers organization and the team had been looking at trade deals before he’d made his wants clear. Thomas on the other hand had his breakout season making the all star game for his first time. He had felt love for the organization and for the city of Boston after he felt the love and support given to him, from the city after the passing of his sister during the first round of the playoffs. Thomas felt heartbreak after the trade but he knew it was all just business.

The Alabama Crimson Tide and Georgia Bulldogs played each other in the college football national championship game on January 8th. The Crimson Tide has now played in three of the four national championships since it was established in 2014, and the Tide won the title in 2015. Georgia’s Bulldogs held a lead for a majority of the game but coming into the fourth quarter of play the Tide came to tie the game 20 to 20. In the first overtime session the Tide outscored the Bulldogs six to three and took home their second of the four national championships.
