On April 20th, Sandia students organized a walkout to highlight the lack of gun control in the United States. Around 20 students attended the walkout, which took place from the end of third period through lunch. Students gathered by the Pennsylvania entrance to the commons and then walked over to the Candelaria and Pennsylvania corner to address traffic. The students then walked around the school campus with signs saying things such as "Schools shouldn't be war zones" and "Thoughts and prayers are not enough". The students sat by the bull in the grass before lunch to regain energy. During lunch the organized students sat in the commons silently, in the ensuing minutes a separate group of students organized with pro gun signs. After tension rose Principle D’anza told both sides to end their protests.
