In the middle of April, James Comey gave the remarkable interview still lingering in everyone’s minds. Comey said things about Trump that nobody expected- but still rung true in the ears of many Americans. In his interview with George Stephanopolous, Comey talked about why he wrote his book, A Higher Loyalty, and took a standing on Trump that resides with many who watched the interview. Trump was furious with the the things Comey said about him, tweeting, “I never asked Comey for Personal Loyalty. I hardly even knew this guy. Just another of his many lies. His “memos” are self serving and FAKE!”, near the time of the interview.
In the interview, Comey starts out by giving a peculiar and a nuanced perspective on Trump- “But I liken President Trump in the book to a forest fire. Going to do tremendous damage. Going to damage those important norms. But a forest fire gives healthy things a chance to grow that had no chance before that fire”. By saying this, he implies that Trump is horribly destructive, but is also paving the way for new things. This is a new take that America hasn’t seen before- that Trump can be both good and bad for the presidency. Comey goes on to talk about ethics in the White House, and his loyalty not to the President, but to the people of the United States.
Comey stated “A person who sees moral equivalence in Charlottesville, who talks about and treats women like they're pieces of meat, who lies constantly about matters big and small and insists the American people believe it, that person's not fit to be president of the United States”. While Comey has given a reliable interview, we have yet to see all the ripples in the presidency that many thought would be instant. There has been ripples in the fabric of the presidency, but with the magnitude of knowledge the former FBI Director James Comey had on the subject of Donald Trump’s inner workings, it was generally believed that some form of prosecution would be in place immediately after the interview was displayed to the public. Comey has not said anything that can directly incriminate the President of the United States but he has shed light onto the mental state of the man who is in charge of our country, though whether it is for better or for worse has yet to be fully determined.
What James Comey has told America about its President is equal parts interesting as it is terrifying. What Americans thought they knew is only confirmed in the painfully truthful interview that Comey gave. Nearing the end of the interview, Comey articulates, “I do hope people of all political stripes will realize what unites us is actually more important than what divides us...We have to choose a leader who will embody the values of this country. That’s how I hope it ends”, ending the discussion with a powerful and significant statement. It can only be hoped that more injustice in the White House will be brought to light.
