The turnout for Friday night’s Sandia homecoming game against Rio Grande was huge. Everyone wanted to see a good football game, but most importantly, who would be crowned the king and queen. The entire court looked nervous, anxiously awaiting to see if their name would be rung throughout the stadium as the new 2018 homecoming queen or king. With the Sandia football boys having a comfortable lead going into the second half, the spirits of the crowd were high. The parents lined up with their anxious child waiting for the queue to take their places on the field. Each member of the court was introduced and when the members of the court who are also involved in band names were read off, horns, drums, and trumpets blasted throughout the windy stadium. The moment arrived for the winners to be announced and Gekhari Loftis was the first prince that was crowned, second was Joe Barreras. For the princesses it was Nicole Bloomfield, and Cierra Venable. Then, to the appeasement of the crowd, the king, Lorenzo Gomez, and the queen, Hannah Gallegos were awarded their crowns and then sent off into the crowd for the numerous pictures and congratulations. Sandia ended up beating Rio Grande 42 to 17 in the end and everyone went home anticipating the following nights dance.
