In order to boost school spirit and excite students for the upcoming events at Sandia, the March Pep Assembly was held on Friday, March 1, between third and fifth period. The assembly started off, like always, with the colors and Choir singing the national anthem. This was then followed by Max, a notable senior who also sings for Choir, singing the Spongebob theme song to honor the death of Stephen Hillenburg and encouraged the audience to sing along. Max then led class chants, of which he did three rounds.
After the initial introduction to the assembly, one student from each class was requested to go onto the floor to participate in a game requiring the contestants to shake a box strapped to them. The junior contestant, Ashley Ortiz, ended up winning. Following this game, Ryan Morris, drama teacher, made an announcement about the Matathon and advertised the school play being put on, Peter and the Starcatcher. The show was put on Wednesday and Thursday, and will be performing Friday March 1st at 6:30, and on Saturday March 2nd at 2:00 o’clock.
After this announcement, the Drill and Dance team did a glow stick performance. Following their performance, the junior class officers made an announcement about this year’s Prom. The theme is going to be “Shipwrecked in Paradise”, and tickets will cost $25. Prom will be held on April 6th. Subsequently, the freshman class officers made an announcement about the Penny Wars, a “competition between the classes to raise money and get points.” The officers then went around to collect pennies from each class. There was then a short “Oreo Game” with teachers competing against students to see who could successfully eat the most oreos. Teachers won.
Athletic Director Brian Weems gave shout outs to various teams for their accomplishments. He mentioned girls basketball for winning district, as well as the swim and wrestling team. He then gave out personal honors to students who had done exceedingly well in their sports. There was then an announcement from the Matathon committee, urging people to go and donate, and recommending attendees to bring lots of water. The Matathon dance marathon is being held on Friday, March 1st, from 3-9 PM.
The assembly was closed off with a toilet paper mummy contest, of which the sophomores won, and a performance from the Varsity Cheer team. Finally, band played the Fight Song and the assembly ended.
